Wycheproof is known as the halfway town between Melbourne and Mildura, on the Calder Highway – the perfect place to grab a bite to eat and refuel on Gridlock Coffee High Beam blend before you hit the road again.
The owners are passionate about providing a quality service to both locals and visitors alike, and have turned the old Shire Hall into a bustling bakery/cafe. The commercial kitchen sits inside the front door and the customer entrance is via a side door down the driveway.
Plenty of seating inside, including a communal table in the former Chambers and some too-cool-for-school recycled wooden tables outside, as well as a stunning bench made from local timber.
Even the seemingly endless grain train that runs down the middle of the main street, makes a stop for a coffee run, before rumbling off down the tracks to the Southern ports.
Fresh baked pies and a Mallee Lamb souvlaki (on a foccacia) hit the spot for our lunch and the coffee alone was worth the drive.
